EDUCATION

A little bit about me

I graduated from the Brooks Institute of Photography in 1997, back when everything revolved around film—processing in darkrooms, long hours in lighting studios, endless printing, and a whole lot of precision. I worked comfortably across every format: 35mm, medium format, even the classic 4×5. It was an intensely technical education, and somewhere along the way, that intensity dimmed my creative spark.

In 2011, everything shifted when I started shooting with my iPhone. For the first time in years, I felt that old sense of devotion return. I was making images simply because I loved it.

My life as a photographer has taken many forms, but in 2016 I found the project that means the most to me. I began photographing Havana, Cuba—and committed myself to a ten-year journey that continues to shape my work and my life.

The vast majority of the work here has been shot with my iPhone. Teaching people to use this camera and helping them have a better understanding of its strengths, combined with a few secrets to taking better photos has lead me to the career in photography I had been looking for.

I find myself now at the end of 2025, technology has continued to evolve and I find myself adding a camera for the first time in over a decade.  Simplicity, speed and weight are the key components for me. I still shoot with and love my iPhone but now there’s a DSLR in my fanny pack.

A Commitment to Cuba

In 2016 I committed to documenting Havana for 10 years. What I imagined I would capture has shifted in unexpected ways. I thought I’d see Cuba becoming more modern, with a stronger Western presence. I assumed the architecture would continue to deteriorate, and I hoped life for Cubans would keep improving, as it seemed to be when I first arrived.

The reality is different. Life today is more difficult than at any point in the past fifty years. Many things that once felt certain no longer are. Between 2022 and 2023, more than a million people left the island—the largest migration wave in Cuba’s history.

A Bit More About Cuba

Currently the food shortages resemble what was seen 50 years ago. Long lines and not very many choices. Eduardo hunts for flour and powdered milk and they can really only be found on the black market. He paid around $12 USD for a pound of flour. About 1/3 of the monthly salary for most Cubans

In the last year over 250,000 Cubans have left Havana. The largest and fastest exodus in Cuba’s history is happening right now. Most of this leaves me speachless and heart broken. But life in Cuba goes on, there are good things and bad things. There are so many things to be spoken of it’s hard to even know where to start. Many years ago, my friend Tony said, “trying to understand Cuba will make you crazy.”

For now, the best way I know to support the Cuban people is to continue telling their story. To share their beauty, and heartfelt warmth that I experience. To make sure the world knows they are there! They are struggling, and they are striving for change. I always feel honored to introduce people to Havana, and the Cuban people. Cuba has changed my life and I believe that it’s an experience of a life time.
